Princesses Don’t Come Out in the Rain: London and Maddie’s Tips for Visiting Disneyland and California Adventure

Rex and I have been traveling to Southern California together (for business and pleasure) for almost 15 years, but it wasn’t until February 2005 that we made our first trip with London (then 4) and Maddie (not quite 3). With a focus on surf, sand, restaurants, and art galleries (adult activities that our girls have grown to love), we only planned one day at Disneyland. You know that song, “It Never Rains in Southern California”?? Well, turns out that the day we went to Disney, it poured. We had enough of a good time to know that we needed to stay at the Grand Californian (don’t forget to ask for bunk beds!) the next year, but we also learned London and Maddie’s first tip for visiting Disneyland: “The princesses don’t come out in the rain.” Their tomboy mother could have told them that — ruins the hair and make-up — but next year we knew better.

The girls are too busy getting ready to go back to school tomorrow to be able to post all of their recommendations right now, but they’ve got plenty of stories after four annual visits to Disneyland and three to sister theme park California Adventure.

Last May, I was in Hong Kong Disneyland for the third time since it opened. It rained while we were there. Instead of the usual Disney on Parade, they had Mickey’s Rainy Day express. The characters were all aboard a train in their rain gear and just swayed and waved to the crowd along with with the music. It lasted less than 5 minutes. I found it amusing only because I’ve seen what the real parade is. If I hadn’t, I would have been as disappointed as first time visitors to the park.
